Nestled on the east side of Mount Desert Island and surrounded by Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor was established in 1796 and has long been the gateway to Acadia National Park. The historic tourist town first came to prominence after inspiring the works of famed artists such as Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. Soon, its natural beauty drew summer residents who became known as rusticators, these included notable and wealthy families like the Astors, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Carnegies and Morgans. Today Bar Harbor continues to serve as the gateway to Acadia National Park. Offering inspiration, relaxation and outdoor activities, it has something to offer everyone.
